What is an Event Supervisor

Event Supervisors are almost the central cog and linchpin which make the SD Science Olympiad State Tournament come together!

Your role in the SD Science Olympiad is to supervise the event you are in charge of, which involves any prep or setup for the event, proctoring  knowledge-based and lab skills events, or timing and measuring build-type events. Finally, you are expected to assess or grade the results and submit your grades to the Tournament results manager.

Each year, we turn to our "Departmental Coordinators", or a faculty member in each department, to help identify colleagues who are able to conduct the various events on Tournament Day. If this is your first time as Event Supervisor, be sure to thoroughly review the Rules Manual and Event Supervisor Resource spreadsheet for guidance.

What Do I Do?

Here's a quick breakdown of how to prepare for your event as Event Supervisor:

Resources for Event Supervisors

Event Supervisors generally are experts in the field of which the event resides. As a result, we count on our faculty and senior graduate students to help our Tournament by volunteering to be an Event Supervisor!

Event Supervisors have a lot to work on in order for their event to run smoothly during the Tournament. We want to support our Event Supervisors so they can put on the best Event for our visiting teams. Below are some tools to help you prepare and plan for your Event. If you have thoughts on how we can improve this resource page, please let us know!

Check back regularly to this space for new tools and resources to help you put on a great Event for your teams!

The Importance of Assistants

Many events can be handled by a single individual: the Event Supervisor. However, assistants can help with timing the events, measuring distances, and, importantly, final grading!
