Student Opportunities to Support the
SD Sci-Oly
The SD Science Olympiad is a large production, requiring participation throughout our University and across all levels of our USD family!
Faculty are crucial to our competition by taking on the role of Event Supervisors.
Students (graduate and undergraduate) are key to our success by judging the events. Event Judges are frequently, but not exclusively, students who have significant links with the given Event's department
However, we have need for other students to help Coaches and Teams navigate our campus as they make their way to their next Event in an efficient, timely manner. To that end, we need your help with:

Definition of Volunteer Roles
Building Managers |
Tentative numbers: (5-8?)
Building managers are responsible for helping guide arriving teams to the correct rooms in the building, ensuring teams are able to find their best exit after their event, and that all Event Supervisors have enough support for their events.
Building managers will also help direct volunteers to the events where they are needed, and help ensure Event Supervisors are able to get their closed envelopes sent to Scoring Center either personally or by runner.

Event Volunteers |
Tentative Numbers: (45?)
Many events require volunteer help to be able to be run well for the teams. Event volunteers will be assigned as many events as we can assign in order to help you accumulate community service hours. Most roles are fairly easy to take on, and your Event Supervisor will instruct you on what to do to when you arrive.
Each building’s Building Manager will help you find the places you are assigned to assist. If you are unable to attend on short notice, please let us know as soon as possible.

Roaming Information Guides
|
Tentative Numbers: (~5)
Tournament Day can be hectic since competing teams are on campus, and many competing students will be at USD for their very first time. With 46 events, eight teams, and up to 15 students per team, there will be a need for volunteers who can help guide teams and students to their next building and event.
Information Guides will be able to utilize your expert familiarity with the USD campus to help our competitors find their way. You may likely find yourself outside for several hours, but we will try to set your locations to be convenient for teams but comfortable for you.

Media |
Tentative Numbers: (4-6?)
As the SD Science Olympiad continues to grow with the students who compete in our tournaments, we are in need of the ability to capture the activities so we can share these experiences with their families, home schools, and inspire future participation with SDSO.
We are looking for a few student volunteers who are comfortable with taking photos and videos of our competitors “in the moment”. You will need to travel throughout the campus throughout the day, cataloguing our tournament and those who help make it work. There may be opportunity to assist with livestream and social media updates throughout the day.
At the end of the day, you will be able to deliver your recordings to our Media Specialist.

Runners |
Tentative numbers: (4-8?)
Communications between Event Supervisors, Building managers, and the Executive Team will need to rely on runners to help solve live issues that may inevitably arise. Runners, as the name suggests, will be ready to move around campus on a moment’s notice to ensure Event Supervisors have any materials or other support as needed.
Runners will also assist with taking Event envelopes from their buildings to the Scoring Center as events conclude and the Event Supervisors conclude their scoring work.
