Registration & Mileage Assistance

The South Dakota Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, a.k.a. "SD EPSCoR", helps support STEM activities within the state of South Dakota.

Part of their mission is to continue building interest and experience with STEM and education in the sciences here in South Dakota

Many schools in our state need help with covering additional costs for participating in the South Dakota Science Olympiad State Tournament. The reasons they need assistance is often associated with limited resources a school may have, such as being in a sparsely-population area or having a low student enrollment.

To help increase engagement with our many small schools, SD EPSCoR has approved assistance for teams that meet the definition of a "Rural School".  To see if your school qualifies as a Rural School, please review the following qualifications:
SDSO Definition for a school to meet the designation "Rural" school:
A school can be designated a "rural" school if the school meets one of the following conditions:
  • Serving a town / city with a population below 10,000 residents
OR
  • A Public School having a student body enrollment below 400 students for grades 5 -8 (Div B level) or 9 - 12 (Div C level).
*  A municipality's population will be determined based on the most recent data found on https://www.southdakota-demographics.com/cities_by_population, which estimates population annually.
**  A public school's enrollment will be determined based on the most recent data found on https://doe.sd.gov/ofm/enrollment.aspx .
If you feel your school meets the qualifications, please contact the State Director for instructions on how to get reimbursed for these expenses associated with registering for and travelling to the State Tournament.

Other support options are being explored. Check back regularly for more information!
